Community

Historical Society

The Oak Grove Historical Society was first organized

and incorporated in 1978, but became inactive in the early

1980s. In January 2007, the Oak Grove Historical Society was

reorganized, officers were elected and goals established. The

Mission Statement of the Historical Society is “to preserve and

maintain the natural, civil, literary, commercial, economic, and

ecclesiastical history that has shaped our community so future

generations can appreciate the heritage of their community

and town.”

The Historical Society has an ongoing commemorative me-

morial plaque program to honor former area residents. Plaques

are displayed in the lower level of the Davis Center, where the

group meets at 10 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month. In

addition to the regular business meeting, programs are often

given by local historians.

As part of fundraising efforts, the Historical Society offers

a Christmas tree ornament each year bearing the image of a

local historically significant building or event. Calendars fea-

turing historical pictures of local buildings and citizens and

the sale of historical afghans also are fundraising projects.

On Saturday, July 22, 2017, the Historical Society will host

a Bluegrass Festival at Frick Park Arena, a fundraising event

for the organization.

Members encourage all those with an interest in the history

of Oak Grove and the surrounding community to join and sup-

port the group. Meetings are open to the public, and annual or

lifetime memberships are available.
