2020-2021 Focus on Oak Grove City Guide Page 46 Health Animal therapies Two area farms, Owl Hollow and JAKES Club, pro- vide land and horses as a means of therapy to children at no expense to participants. Owl Hollow Farm in Lone Jack provides a place of safety, acceptance and healing for children in need. Director Cathy White rescues horses, who in turn, rescue children who come to the program from various backgrounds and needs ranging from autism, ADD and Down syndrome to those who carry emotional scars that need healing. White hopes friendship with an ani- mal will soothe those children. Each child in the program is paired with a horse, a mentor and an assistant who help the child take care of an animal and perhaps learn to ride. Sessions are one hour once a week and last 9 weeks for children ages 5-17. Typically, the first session runs April-June, and the second session runs August-Octo- ber; however, spring classes were cancelled this year and are re-scheduled for the fall session beginning August 10. The farm is a family-friendly environment and has hosted a fall event for the public in the past. Those with questions may call 816-668-0926, email ohfkids@gmail.com or visit the website at ohfkids. com. Owl Hollow Farm is located south of Oak Grove at 10908 S. Hunt Rd, Lone Jack. Owl Hollow is also looking for volunteers ages 14 and over to help with the farm. JAKES club or Jesus and Kids Evangelistic Saddle Club began in 2000 because Cathie Perry, executive director, believes the motto, “Every rider is able with Jesus in the stable.” The program began with one horse, and one seven- year-old with special needs, who Perry wanted to min- ister to through Jesus and equine therapy. Since then she has moved the farm to 39002 E. Nevins Rd, Oak Grove. The farm has a saddle club for volunteers and a ther- apeutic saddle club for children. Teaching the sport of riding is the focus of the program. The spring and summer programs were cancelled this year due to COVID-19 and will be re-evaluated in September.
