Uniting to share a common goal of creating a society that we want our children to grow up in, a philanthropist is simply defined as a lover of humanity. People can be a philanthropist in multiple capacities; giving their time, money, influence and resources to benefit people who they may not know personally in seeking to promote solutions at the root of a social problem. At UMB Bank, we strive to help our clients instill these values in future generations. We believe that “more defines us” and the leadership team at UMB Bank strives to deliver this to our customers in everything we do. I find this especially impactful as the president of UMB’s Personal Banking division. Many of our associates spend a large portion of their day helping customers strategize about maximizing their hard-earned wealth in a way that will allow them to philanthropically benefit the communities they call home. They work tirelessly to lead by example and teach future generations about the benefits of giving. I am proud of the associates offering financial guidance to our customers, as I know they embody the same philosophy that guides our own leadership team: “More defines us.” People tend to think of philanthropy as giving financially, but there are so many ways to contribute to the communities we live in. As you explore the Springfield Giving Guide, please take a moment to consider how you, your company or your family can make a positive impact on your community and in turn teach future generations about the benefits of giving. If we continue to create generations of philanthropist, we can all do our part in creating an empathetic and loving society. We hope that by encouraging people to foster a generation of givers, simple acts of kindness will become second nature. We encourage you to inspire those around you to seek out creative ways to contribute to the betterment of their cities. We have learned that leading by example is always the best way to make an impact. In 2016, 1,112 UMB associates volunteered more than 9,809 hours. The estimated economic value of UMB associates’ volunteer hours totaled $231k across 450+ organizations. I believe that in order for a community to thrive, the businesses that operate within it must have an unwavering dedication beyond just the services they provide. We strive to lead by this example. We look forward to continuing the many sponsorships and philanthropic efforts we’ve supported over the last 104 years as a Missouri-based bank, we look forward to continuing to provide the critical financial services needed to foster a vibrant economy and community right here in southwest Missouri. Sincerely, Dana Abraham President. UMB Personal Banking
