It’s the second six-figure- plus donation to MSU’s College of Business in as many months, according to university news releases.  “Dr. Lansford devoted his entire career to educating stu- dents. His intentions were to continue helping students attend college long after he and his wife, Beuna Lans- ford, passed away,” said Brent Dunn, executive director of the MSU Foundation, in a news release. “These scholar- ships at MSU will certainly make a positive difference for now and generations to come.”  Lansford earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and gen- eral business from MSU in 1947 and built a career in the U.S. Army and as a business professor at the University of Missouri. He retired from teaching in 1984, according to the re- lease.  Lansford died in September 2019, just a couple weeks be- fore his 99th birthday, according to his obituary.  The release did not detail how the funds would be issued to students.  The news comes after a $1 million donation was ac- cepted last month by MSU’s College of Business. The gift from Independence businessperson and MSU alumnus Phil Roberts will fund $2,000 annually to about 22 business majors with a qualifying 3.0 GPA. Academy of Hair Design wins 2020 Small Business Award by Christine Morton · cmorton@sbj.net The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce named Academy of Hair Design Inc. the 2020 W. Curtis Strube Small Business Award winner during a Nov. 11 virtual cer- emony livestreamed from the Oasis Hotel & Convention Center.  “What a surprise,” said Jerry BeVelle, one of the own- ers of Academy of Hair Design. “I want to extend thanks to our staff – they are the ones who make things happen.”  Matt Morrow, CEO and president of the chamber, said each of the finalists created jobs and showed growth with- in their businesses.  Academy of Hair Design was founded by entrepre- neurs BeVelle, David Gonzales and Christie Gonzales, ac- cording to a news release from the chamber.  The cosmetology and barber school trains students in a full-service salon environment. Superintendent Lin- da Daugherty has said students learn guest relations and guest services skills by engaging with the community. For example, students cut hair for free at the Springfield Dream Center once a month, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting. Students also are trained with the tools to grow their own business.  Four other businesses were finalists for the 2020 Small Business Award:  • Burgess Aircraft Management LLC, dba OzAirCharter Ser- vice, which operates a fleet of nine jets from Springfield;  • OMG Commerce, an e-commerce and digital market- ing agency with a focus on advertising via Amazon and Google; • Pearson-Kelly Technology, a managed service provider for information technology; and • Volt Credit Union, a nearly 85-year-old credit union that recently rebranded. The 29th annual Small Business Award is given in honor of the late Curtis Strube, a former director at Drury Uni- versity’s Breech School of Business Administration.
