Catch up with the alumni. 2001 JOE DAUES, 57 Then: News Anchor, KOLR-TV Now: CEO, Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks Joe Daues has gone from sitting behind the television news desk to standing in front of a million-dollar nonprofit. There were a few stops in between – an entrepre- neur, salesman and production director. In mid-2019, Daues shifted into the non- profit world, taking the CEO reins of Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. The job wasn’t handed to him. Daues was selected among 160 applicants. “I’m a big believer that there’s a long, crooked road that takes you right where you need to go,” he told Springfield Busi- ness Journal in December. “I had no doubt 1999 BRAD BODENHAUSEN, 52 Then: Senior Vice President of Public Affairs/ Communications, Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce Now: Associate Vice President of International Education and Training, Missouri State University Since making the jump to Missouri State University from the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce in 2013, Brad Bodenhausen and his team have developed some 60 programs for the international ed- ucation and training department he helped create. The bulk of the programs are cus- tomized education, he says, with the goal of building cultural competencies. It’s a goal he’s long been passionate about. And he can trace its origins to a monthlong stay in northern Sweden in 1997 through Rotary. “In such a time of really trending toward isolation and exclusion and withdrawal from international communities,” he says, “we feel like that the world is so connected and so interdependent that we really need to focus on those connections and commu- nities.” —Christine Temple, Features Editor 2000 JOHN WANAMAKER, 59 Then: Partner and Director of Management Consulting Services Department, BKD LLP’s Southern Missouri Practice Now: Retired These days, John Wanamaker can be found traversing the country in his rec- reational vehicle or making the rounds in Europe, though COVID-19 restrictions have hampered those travel plans to some extent. It’s the perks of retirement for the for- mer BKD managing partner, who exited in 2018 after 34 years with the public ac- counting firm. It was a personal decision to step away before BKD’s mandatory retirement age of 62, he says, pointing to the fact that his fa- ther died at age 55. “As you start getting past the age when your dad died, you start worrying a little bit about, ‘Have I spent enough time smelling the roses?’” Wanamaker says. While he’s now heavily in vacation mode, he still has ties in Springfield. He’s part of the Springfield Good Government Com- mittee and a member of the Missouri State University Foundation Board of Trustees, among other groups. —Geoff Pickle, Web Editor that I could really add a good perspective and bring something new to the table for BCFO.” One such move is a unique partnership with a Missouri State University sorority focused on breast cancer awareness. Daues recently told sbjLive BCFO has asked the sorority to produce a creative video for so- cial media, to tap into a younger audience. “Those kinds of partnerships and groups are really where we’re headed,” he says, “instead of just saying, stuff some enve- lopes or just stand here for this running event. That’s the goal.” —Eric Olson, Editor 2002 SCOTT ROSE, 44 Then: Realtor, Murney & Associates Now: Realtor, Murney & Associates If Scott Rose could give advice to his younger self in 2002, he would preach per- severance and to stick to the job through the ups and downs. “I’ve seen the good times with the bad times,” he says. The economic downturn in 2008 was a test of survival for Rose. The Leadership Springfield Class 28 member says being able to give good counsel and working to stay relevant during that time helped him weather the storm and continue into his 22nd year of practicing real estate.
