Often, when people consider what it means to give back to the com- munity, the concepts of making charitable donations or volunteering time come to mind. These days, however, there are a number of differ- ent ways to make a positive impact on the community. One of these is environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing, and at UMB Bank, we’re proud to be a leader in this space. As you’ll read in our article in this Giving Guide issue, ESG investing involves putting money into funds that align with an investor’s values, such as environmentally-friendly companies, organizations that are ener- gy-conscious and other corporations that highly value social responsibil- ity. The chance to “do good” with your investments is not a new notion, but it’s one that is evolving, and we’re pleased to offer value-based investing options to investors who have this proclivity. While ESG investing is rapidly growing, there is still a significant op- portunity to share information about this exciting option, which is why we have included more details in this guide. For those who are actively looking for innovative ways to extend and complement their existing philanthropic and community practices, we believe this information will provide you with the details you need to begin evaluating this option. People tend to think of philanthropy as giving financially, but there are so many ways to contribute to the communities we live in. As you ex- plore the Springfield Giving Guide, please take a moment to consider how you, your company or your family can make a positive impact on your community. We encourage you to inspire those around you to seek out creative ways to contribute to the betterment of their cities. We have learned that leading by example is always the best way to make an impact. In 2018, UMB associates logged more than 25,000 hours of community involve- ment at more than 675 nonprofit organizations. The estimated economic value of UMB associates’ volunteer hours totaled $556,000. I believe that for a community to thrive, the businesses that operate within it must have an unwavering dedication beyond the services they provide. We strive to lead by this example. We look forward to continu- ing the many sponsorships and philanthropic efforts we’ve supported over the last 106 years as a Missouri-based bank, and we look forward to continuing to provide the critical financial services and products need- ed to foster a vibrant economy and community right here in southwest Missouri and beyond. Sincerely, Nikki Newton, President, Private Wealth Management 2019 GIVING GUIDE 5
