Testimonials “Education is the key to a better life for my children. Learning in all capacities gives my children a chance to think about life outside of our circumstances. I want to open every door possible for my children to explore the world. I don’t want their imagination to be limited by my income.” —Membership scholarship recipient “Our children come from generational poverty and education is not always a priority when food or hygiene needs are not met. Now that our children have been adopted and are on the outside of foster care they see education as an opportunity but also the importance of continuing to learn outside of school. The Discovery Center provides the oppor- tunity for children of all backgrounds to see the importance of education beyond a pencil and paper.” —Membership scholarship recipient “Currently women and women of color are under- represented in STEM. My hope is that through the experiences that this program provides, she will continue to explore and remain engaged in the field of science.” —Mother of a Summer of Science scholarship recipient Mission Statement Discovery Center of Springfield (DCS) is an interac- tive, hands-on science museum committed to inspir- ing people of all ages with a lifelong love of learning and an appreciation of the world and our place in it. Service Area The Discovery Center is the only science center and children’s museum in southwest Missouri and serves 36 Missouri counties, 22 additional states, Canada, and Costa Rica through general admission, educa- tional outreach programs, and video conferencing lessons. Funding The Discovery Center is a community-funded museum that relies on public and private dona- tions as well as grants from individuals, businesses, and foundations. Revenue from outreach lessons, in-house education programs, admission sales, and annual memberships also fund the operations. 12 Month Goals Over the next year, our strategic plan is to focus on three goals: to deliver our passion for STEM and opioid education to our underserved community at little or no cost to these participants; to create mission growth through implementing Jack Stack’s the Great Game of Business; and to bring new life into the museum through traveling exhibits, remod- els, new exhibits, and new programs. 40 2019 GIVING GUIDE SPRINGFIELD BUSINESS JOURNAL | ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT
