2023-2024 Odessa City Guide Page 48 Odessa BackSnack program attempts to alleviate hunger in the Odessa School District by providing backpacks lled with food to families in need of assistance. The BackSnack board works closely with school counselors and social workers to identify food-insecure families. Backpacks are sent home on weekends and are also available for pickup throughout the summer. Program is supported by community members through grants and donations by businesses, churches, civic groups and individuals. Donations of time, money and new or used backpacks or bags are needed. Those who are wanting to provide community service may shop and pack bags. Kid-friendly, nonperishable food donations, easily prepared with minimal ingredients, are accepted. Monetary donations are tax deductible and may be given through the school district’s Central Of ce or directly to the BackSnack Program. Food and backpack donations may be made at Odessa participating churches: First United Methodist, First Christian Church, Church of Christ, St. George Catholic and Zion United Church of Christ, Mayview. During the COVID-19 school closure, BackSnack continued to provide food to local children. Those with questions may call coordinator Bessie Madsen, 263-5045.
