Oak Grove’s public library, located at 2320 S. Broadway, is a branch of the Mid-Continent Public Libraries. Established in 1965, Mid-Continent is the largest library system in the state of Missouri and one of the finest library systems in the nation. Headquartered in Independence, the system includes 33 branches and throughout Clay, Jackson and Platte counties. Using interlibrary loan services, this network greatly increases availability of materials to Oak Grove library patrons. Amy Vajnar manages the Oak Grove Branch. The Oak Grove Branch was one of the first branches to be renovated after Proposition L passed November 2016, bringing $113.2 million in improvements throughout the system. The renovations allowed for a larger enclosed community room for programming as well as improvements in fixtures, carpeting, computers and improved Wi-Fi coverage in Oak Grove. The Oak Grove branch hours are Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. On-site programs are being offered throughout the summer for children and youth, and story time is offered year-round at 10 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. MCPL offers a mobile-friendly website with access to downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, music, streaming videos, research databases, online tutoring and homework help at www. mymcpl.org. MCPL cultivates literacy skills to prepare children and families for lifelong success through their website as well as reading programs, like this year’s “Oceans of Possibilities” running May 31-August 23. Dive into a good book at least 20 minutes a day this summer to keep kids engaged and active. It’s a good opportunity to experience the ocean of possibilities that exist when we read. A winter reading program is also offered for adults. Mid-Continent partners with schools and promotes the 1,000 before Kindergarten program to encourage familiarity and a love of books in the youngest patrons. One way in which MCPL connects citizens to innovative services and resources to expand opportunity and build community is through their Square One Small Business program. MCPL also builds the capacity of individuals and organizations to create and share their stories through The Midwest Genealogy Center and local history branch, which is nationally recognized and available for research. The Story Center Series and Woodneath Press are other opportunities for patrons to publish and share their stories while building literacy. Information regarding programs can be obtained on the website. The Branch may also be reached at (816)690-3213.
