The Mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to enhance the quality of life for community members and visitors by providing well-maintained parks and facilities, innovative recreational programs and leisure activities as well as a staff motivated in the best interest of the community. The Parks and Recreation Department office is located at the Fieldhouse, 1300 SE 30th St. in Bent Oak Park. Residents and non-residents wanting to reserve or schedule use of park facilities such as the ball fields, soccer fields, shelter houses, horse arena or other key park facilities may contact the Parks office at (816) 690-4003 or stop by the office. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. The Fieldhouse as well as the Davis Memorial Center and shelter houses, can be rented through the Parks office at 816-690-4003 or email ogpr@cityofoakgrove.com or dconyers@cityof oakgrove.com. Parks and Recreation offers a class in basic dog obedience. The department offers two special nights for families to dance, eat dinner and socialize with other families, a father/daughter dance and a mother/son dance. Parks and Recreation sponsors MLB Pitch, Hit and Run Competition at Webb Park each year. The 4th of July celebration will once again be a community event which will begin at 6 p.m. at Bent Oak Park with a DJ, several food vendors, face painters, balloon artists, Sni Valley Fire engine demonstrations and tethered hot air balloons, weather permitting. People are encouraged to bring yard games for entertainment as well as food. No personal fireworks are allowed in the park. City fireworks display will be at 10 p.m., weather permitting. The skate park located behind City Hall was built in 2004 and is open from dawn to dusk. Other park facilities include Caraway Lake, located north of the I-70 bridge on H Highway, an eight-acre lake stocked with crappie, catfish, bass and other types of game fish which requires a city fishing permit; Frick Park, located at 801 W. 12th St, a 57-acre facility that includes an equestrian arena, restrooms, athletic fields and play ground; and Webb Park, located at 1800 SE Oak Ridge Drive, a multiple athletic field area with two rentable pavilions, tennis, volleyball and a basketball court. Parks are open 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. A summer dive-in movie night will be offered at the pool Friday, July 22. Dear Santa letters are another parks and rec tradition. Families may deposit letters to Santa at the Davis Center and include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Parks and Recreation also offers a holiday homes lighting contest which takes place the first and second week of December. Parks and Recreation staff are Scott Matson, director; Dana Conyers, recreation coordinator; Lyndsay Swafford, recreation coordinator; Easton Harmon, recreation coordinator; and Jim Armstrong, parks superintendent. Park Board consists of Jennifer Mausbach, Eric Mitchell, Terry Griffith, Tina May and TJ Connors. Board meets at 6 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month as needed at the Fieldhouse.
