2019-2020 Focus on Oak Grove City Guide Page 57 Community Historical Society Oak Grove Historical Society was first organized and incorporated in 1978, but became inactive in the early 1980s. In January 2007, the Oak Grove Historical Society was reorganized, officers were elected and goals established. Mission Statement of the Historical Society is “to preserve and maintain the natural, civil, literary, commercial, economic, and ecclesiastical history that has shaped our community so future generations can appreciate the heritage of their community and town.” The Historical Society has an ongoing commemorative memorial plaque program to honor former area residents. Plaques are displayed in the lower level of the Davis Center, where the group meets at 10 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month. In addition to the regular business meeting, programs are often given by local historians. As part of fundraising efforts, the Historical Society offers a Christmas tree ornament each year bearing the image of a local historically significant building or event. Calendars featuring historical pictures of local buildings and citizens and the sale of historical afghans also are fundraising projects. Members encourage all those with an interest in the history of Oak Grove and the surrounding community to join and support the group. Meetings are open to the public, and annual or lifetime memberships are available. Organization website is www.OakGroveHistory.com . Lois Young shared an article written about her father- in-law, John Young, who was a local barber, at a meeting of the Oak Grove Historical Society. As a part of the program, wooden figures made by John Young were displayed. Figures were carved with a pocket knife. 30003 East Old US 50 Hwy • Lee’s Summit, MO 816-697-1923 • wwwcockrellmercantile.com Hours: 10-6 Mon - Sat, 12 - 5 Sunday KANSAS CITY’S MOST UNIQUE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE!
