The mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to enhance the quality of life for community members and visitors by providing well-maintained parks and facilities, innovative recreational programs and leisure activities as well as a staff motivated in the best interest of the community. The Parks and Recreation Department relocated to the Fieldhouse at 1300 SE 30th St. in Bent Oak Park. Residents and non-residents wanting to reserve or schedule use of park facilities such as the ball fields, soccer fields, shelter houses, horse arena or other key park facilities may contact the Parks office at (816) 690-4003 or stop by the office. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. The Fieldhouse as well as the Davis Memorial Center and shelter houses, can be rented through the Parks office at 816-690-4003 or email lswafford@cityofoakgrove.com or dconyers@cityof oakgrove.com. Parks and Recreation offers a class in basic dog obedience. Department also offers a Tots in the Park program twice a month June-August for ages birth to pre-K. Registration is required. The department offers two special nights for families to dance, eat dinner and socialize with other families. The father/daughter dance is held in March/April and the mother/son dance is held in May. A youth tennis camp is conducted in June at Webb Park. Parks and Recreation sponsors the MLB Pitch, Hit and Run Competition at Webb Park each year, and there are youth tennis camps in June. The 4th of July celebration at Bent Oak Park includes hot air balloon rides, face painting and food trucks. The skate park located behind the Civic Center was built in 2004 and is open from dawn to dusk. Other park facilities include Caraway Lake, located north of the I-70 bridge on H Highway, an eight-acre lake stocked with crappie, catfish, bass and other types of game fish which requires a city fishing permit; Frick Park, located at 801 W. 12th St, a 57-acre facility that includes an equestrian arena, restrooms, athletic fields and playground; and Webb Park, located at 1800 SE Oak Ridge Dr., which has multiple athletic fields, two rentable pavilions, tennis, volleyball and a basketball court. Parks are open 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. Summer movie nights are now offered inside the Fieldhouse June and August, and there is a movie dive-in at the pool in July. Dear Santa letters are another parks and recreation tradition. Families may deposit letters to Santa and include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Watch for information on the website as to the location. Parks and Recreation also offers a holiday homes lighting contest which takes place the first and second week of December. Parks and Recreation staff are: Scott Matson, director ; Dana Conyers, recreation coordinator; Lyndsay Swafford, recreation coordinator; and Jim A rmstrong, parks superintendent. The Park Board officers are Randy Salyer, chairman, Carolyn Bloss, vice chairman, Twana Gower, secretary, and Jeremy Taylor, liaison. Other park board members are Randy Nadeau and Beth Graham.
