2019-2020 Focus on Oak Grove City Guide Page 19 Maple Elementary, 3-5 The elementary academic environment is rich with fiction and nonfiction texts. Students are excited about opportunities to read the wide variety of literature found in classroom libraries, the media center and in the Wonders Literacy Program. The literacy program blends well with the social studies and science curriculum. The science standards include experiments and the Envisions program is used for math. Technology is embedded across the curriculum. The elementary honors three students per grade level each month who are known as the Most Valuable Panthers. These MVPs are recognized as students who have shown great work habits as well as exemplary character traits. Schools Oak Grove R-6 Peggy Tiffany, Elementary principal The Charlene Roscher Early Childhood Center The Charlene Roscher Early Childhood Center is made up of four programs: Parents as Teachers, United Way Success by 6 Resource Center, Title 1 preschool and early childhood special education. They have a toy check-out program that allows families within the school and the community to access educational toys without having to purchase them. Oak Grove Primary, K-2 Oak Grove Primary houses students K-2 and introduces the students to the character education initiative. Each month, students and teachers nominate classmates for Super Panther awards. The primary has 45 teachers and staff to meet the needs of the youngest children in the district from the annual Jog-A-Thon in the fall to the second grade talent show held in May. This year’s Jog-A-Thon raised more than $8000 which will go toward educational programs and activities for the school. The Board of Education is the decision-making branch of the school district, and open meetings are held at 7 p.m. the fourth Monday of each month in the Early Childhood Center. Oak Grove Middle School, 6-8 Oak Grove Middle School houses students in grades 6-8 and completely redesigned their Student Advisory Program or PRIDE. Students meet at the end of each day for 25 minutes, concentrating on activities to develop social emotional strategies for their age group. The middle school offers sports: football, volleyball, boys and girls cross country, wrestling, boys and girls basketball and boys and girls track as extra-curricular. Maple Elementary houses students in grades 3-5 and offers a number of clubs to benefit students and enrich their academic experience. The school offers STARS book club, Games R Us, OGE Helpers, Pet Pals, FIT Club and Kindness Club. The students help with a food drive to benefit Community Services League and have time throughout the school year to participate in the annual Turkey Challenge, a fundraiser that raised $9,100 to purchase two classroom sets of Chromebooks and two carts.
